Rich and Poor, Secular and Holy: Archaeological Reality of Biblical Jerusalem

Jerusalem has been excavated for over a century and the remains of pre-exilic and exilic Jerusalem are just as enigmatic. New excavations in and around the City of David have revealed remains dated to the First Temple but few from the time of David. In this lecture we will discuss how modern archaeology wrestles with these questions and as well as with the identity of those living in Jerusalem through evidence of the biblical food-ways.

about Abra Spiciarich, Zooarchaeologist

Abra Spiciarich is a specialist in archaeological animal bones. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures at Tel Aviv University under the supervision of Israel Finkelstein, Oded Lipschits, and Lidar Sapir-Hen. The focus of her dissertation is on the use of animals in Jerusalem and its hinterland to understand the religious and socio-economic realities of the cultic city during is rise, fall, and reestablishment.

Abra is the daughter of our members, Davida Rosenbaum and Andrew Spiciarich.
